Input VAT

Input VAT is VAT charged on a business’s purchases which may be recoverable under the VAT rules.

Why it matters

Recovery depends on more than seeing VAT on an invoice. The business’s registration, the nature of its supplies, evidence, business use and any restrictions must be considered. Keeping suitable purchase documents makes the return easier to support. Mixed taxable and exempt activities can make the calculation more involved than simply reclaiming all VAT paid.

A practical example

A VAT-registered trader buys equipment for £1,000 plus £200 VAT. If the purchase qualifies for full recovery, the £200 may be included as input VAT on the relevant return. If part of the use is private or restricted, the recoverable amount can differ.

A common misunderstanding

Not every fee contains UK VAT, and a bank statement alone may not be sufficient evidence for a claim. Do not calculate a reclaim by automatically taking a fraction of every business payment. Check the invoice and the applicable treatment first.
