Why it matters
MTD for VAT and MTD for Income Tax should not be treated as the same set of rules. For Income Tax, the phased start depends on qualifying income and circumstances. Preparation should connect software with capture, checking and submission responsibilities. A tidy bank feed alone does not establish that all required digital records are complete.
A practical example
A sole trader and landlord may need to combine relevant gross income to assess the Income Tax threshold. They should establish their start date, identify the records from each activity and agree a reporting routine. The current timetable and exemptions should be checked against HMRC guidance.
A common misunderstanding
Digital updates do not automatically change all tax payment dates or remove the need to consider the annual tax position. Buying software also does not complete registration or correct old records. Use a clear checklist for the regime that applies to you.
