Why it matters
Employers need appropriate employee details, tax codes and payroll records, together with accurate reporting and payment. Payroll includes more than PAYE alone: pension contributions, statutory payments and other deductions may also need attention. Agree information cut-off dates so changes reach the pay run in time and employees receive understandable payslips.
A practical example
When an employee’s gross pay is calculated, payroll determines the relevant deductions and net pay. The employer also needs to account for its own costs and submit the required information to HMRC. The net amount sent to the employee is therefore not the whole cost of employment.
A common misunderstanding
Paying wages from the bank does not complete the employer’s reporting duties. Nor should every payment to a contractor simply be routed through or excluded from PAYE without reviewing status. Keep the employment and payment arrangements clear.
