Why it matters
Duties can include enrolling eligible staff, making contributions, communicating with workers and keeping records. The process continues as the workforce changes; it is not finished when a scheme is opened. Payroll and pension information need to agree, and employers should check the current rules for their staff and circumstances.
A practical example
A new employee joins between pay runs. The employer needs the relevant assessment and communication process, then appropriate contributions and records where required. A later change in age or earnings can affect assessment, so an initial decision should not simply be copied indefinitely.
A common misunderstanding
Having only a small team does not by itself remove the need to assess duties. Nor does outsourcing payroll transfer the employer’s overall responsibility. Ask which tasks the adviser and pension provider handle and which remain with the employer.
