Self Assessment

Self Assessment is HMRC’s system for reporting relevant personal income and gains and calculating the resulting tax position.

Why it matters

Self-employed people, landlords and others may have reporting responsibilities depending on their circumstances. The return can bring together several sources of income, not just one business. Keeping the underlying records organised helps establish what should be reported and what tax has already been paid. Registration, filing and payment have distinct requirements and dates.

A practical example

A sole trader may also have employment income, rental income or taxable gains. Preparing the business accounts does not necessarily complete the personal return. The adviser needs the relevant information from each source to assess the complete position.

A common misunderstanding

Not everyone files for the same reason, and a reminder letter is not the only basis for checking whether a return is required. MTD for Income Tax also introduces different digital reporting obligations for some taxpayers. Check the current rules and your own status rather than assuming last year’s process will always continue.
